Mónica Nava currently works at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) as Senior Director for the Migrant Education Program (MEP), Region 9. The MEP provides regional services to address academic deficits and educational barriers common to migratory families and their children (ages 3-22). The program works to maximize the potential of migrant students while building parents’ leadership skills. Mónica has over thirty years in education serving English learners in various capacities: as a teacher in elementary and secondary settings, a district level resource teacher, a state level consultant with the California Department of Education, a district level administrator, and as senior administrator for support and services for English learners in San Diego County districts and charter schools. During her career, she has served on district, county, and state level committees to oversee services that include professional development for teachers, administrators, and parents to support and sustain standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment for English Learners. She also serves on a local board of directors for a community clinic and began her board of directors’ tenure with ATDLE in January 2013.
