Promoting Bilingualism & Biliteracy Award: Eligibility Criteria and Scoring Guide

    We invite you to nominate – or self-nominate – an individual who embodies a deep commitment to promoting bilingualism and biliteracy in our schools and communities. The Promoting Bilingualism & Biliteracy Award honors those who champion students’ linguistic and cultural strengths, foster equitable and inclusive learning environments, and advance innovative practices that elevate bilingual education. Whether through classroom instruction, community engagement, leadership, or advocacy, nominees should demonstrate meaningful impact that extends beyond their immediate setting and inspires others to value and support bilingualism and biliteracy. Help us recognize the educators, leaders, and visionaries who are shaping a more multilingual and culturally responsive future.

    1. Commitment to Bilingualism & Biliteracy
    • Demonstrates a strong, consistent commitment to the promotion and preservation of bilingualism and biliteracy.
    • Advocates for the benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy within the school, district, and/or community.
    1. Student Impact
    • Actively fosters students’ bilingualism and biliteracy development.
    • Provides students with authentic opportunities to use both languages across academic and social settings.
    • Encourages pride in linguistic and cultural identity.
    1. Instructional Innovation (if nominee is an educator/researcher)
    • Uses innovative teaching or research practices that strengthen bilingual and biliteracy development.
    • Integrates culturally and linguistically relevant pedagogy.
    • Implements effective assessment practices for bilingual and biliteracy growth.
    1. Community & Family Engagement
    • Engages families and communities in supporting bilingualism and biliteracy.
    • Promotes cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
    • Provides outreach that elevates the role of bilingualism and biliteracy in society.
    1. Advocacy & Leadership
    • Advocates for policies, programs, or resources that expand access to dual language immersion.
    • Demonstrates leadership in promoting bilingualism and biliteracy at local, state, or national levels.
    • Mentors others (educators, leaders, or students) to become champions of bilingualism and biliteracy.
    1. Impact Beyond the Classroom
    • Shares knowledge or practices through conferences, workshops, publications, or public forums.
    • Contributes to changing mindsets and broadening support for bilingualism and biliteracy in broader society.
    1. Equity & Inclusion
    • Promotes bilingualism and biliteracy as a pathway for equity, ensuring access for heritage speakers, multilingual learners, and historically underserved students.
    • Elevates the status of both languages equally, preventing language hierarchy.

    • 25–30 = Strong Candidate
    • 18–24 = Developing Candidate
    • Below 18 = Limited Evidence
